Is It Termites?

Subterranean – Underground Living at Its Best
Insects – termites, ants, and grubs, are just one subset of pests that live underground. Gophers, ground squirrels, and voles are another. These are all organisms that have evolved to thrive, living beneath lawns, in hedgerows, and they sometimes make themselves pests in our homes.

Subterranean pests cause damage to homes, yards and landscaping, and sometimes invade your living space. There is nothing like trying to sleep with a mosquito in the house to make the point that even the smallest pest can have a large impact.

Winter Pest Issues
Many of these pests hibernate. Gophers, voles, snakes, ground squirrels are all pests that hibernate during the winter months. They will become active and look for a new den if they are flooded out. Some species of ants and termites, on the other hand, are active all year long. That is why you find ants in your kitchen during the coldest days of the year – They are looking for food. Termites live inside of their food source, so they are protected from the elements and can continue to consume your home all year long.

Subterranean dens stay warm even when the ground above them is frozen solid. That is one of the reasons that geo-thermal heating and cooling works. Down in the ground the temperature stays around 71 degrees. That constant warmth helps these pests remain active even in the dead of winter.
